tuesday 23rd september - day 33 -
nanning
alarm doesnt go off but i wake up at 6.50 fortunately. the front door to the hostel is locked and nobody is about. i snoop about behind the desk and find the keys.
seriously, what the f*** is this place!
we get the no6 to east bust station and get on our 8.30am bus to detian easy peasy.
the bus is 4ish hours and they make us put seatbelts on which is new. they then show us on the tv onboard, numerous real recorded bus crashes from inside the bus - nice one china.
you can definately feel you are boardering vietnam, tropical trees, farming feilds and narrow tall buildings characterise much of the south around guilin and nanning. on the way up to the waterfall, small white painted houses dot around the limestone karst landscape. We arrive later than planned and its 2pm once we finally get off the bus - leaving us with only 1 hour here before the direct bus goes back to nanning. We purchase our tickets and walk around to the entrance.
Immediately you are brought out onto the bank of the river down stream from the falls. Directly opposite, on the vietnam side, is the smaller waterfall and the river bank is lined with plastic tarps which are filled with bamboo rafts for tourists. For an extra 30rmb they will take you near each fall (which actually isnt that much closer than on the bank anyhow).
We decend down a flight of stairs walking along the bank towards the main fall. It doesnt take long before we can feel the spray from the 300ft wide, 98ft drop waterfall.
The waterfall is truly spectacular.. the dense tropic asian landscape serves as the backdrop for the powerfull fall. 3 tiers cascade down into the guichun river forming a bright, white, silky mist.
We walk right along the bank until we are level with the fall and begin the walk back to the entrance. The views along the bank during the way back are the best.
It appears there is some argument as to if the waterfall is on the chinese or vietnamese side and claims that it has not been referenced to by the chinese until recently.
We manage to get some noodles before the bus leaves (very nearly without us)and pay the fare back when we are on the bus - which works out cheaper than this mornings fare. Theres traffic on the way back and we dont get back until really late.
Lying in bed listening to someone have a crap when I see a rat run out from under a bunk. Welcome to f***ing hell.
