'A foggy day in London town...'
I like this song, however the rest of the words don't really apply to me as, in spite of what has been on and off quite dismal weather, I haven't been all that low or down since I have been here. Once again I find myself in a city where there is so much to see and do, and there have been many friendly and familiar faces to catch up with here, too.
My guidebook to London has been lost somewhere between home and my return here, and so I have been mucking out trips around the city with no map and no real way of knowing what sights there are near which tube stations. This has been awesome fun! For someone who is much more into people watching than ticking things off on a list, it is a great way to travel and discover, and London lends itself to this well (although I still can't come to grips with just how BIG it is).
Guildford is lovely in the same way that it was last time I was here. I am staying with Sally and Guy and the boys again and am enjoying their company. The town itself is as pretty as it was last time, but this time different flowers are out - bluebells and tulips - and they are beautiful.
I arrived last Friday, and then had a market weeked with Leah which was awesome. We started with Portobello Road (and I got the song from 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' stuck in my head) which was packed with both people and some awesome wares, had a great vibe. From there we went to the inaugural Real Food Festival, where we were able to sample produce from about 500 stalls. There were cheeses and small goods and chocolates and wines and beers and breads and pastries and sausages and pates and so much other amazing stuff. We tried a horse and pork sausage, not something you can do at home, as well as so much other food. Brought some back for supper, which was again delicious. The next day we hit the markets again and did Camden, Spittalfields and Sunday Up on Brick Lane - all awesome. The market vibe here really is different to at home, and there is some amazing stuff on offer. I bought a skirt and a scarf. From there we went to the pub and had a great long chat.
Caught up with Margot last night and we went for curry in Clapham, near her new home. The service was possibly a little stilted at the restaurant we chose, but the food was great and there was too much of it. Again, it was great to have a good chat, and then we went back to Margot's new place which she is sharing with Mallory and two others and which is really lovely and great to have seen.
Tonight I am off to have dinner with Megan and Rick, and am looking forward to seeing them and swapping travel stories.
