This is Africa. This is the life!
We couldn't have asked for a more amazing last day in Africa, feeling very sad its come to an end but what a way to finish.
We had a nice lie in this morning, last night in our beloved tent- #207 did us well. We headed off to meet our taxi that took us down the road to the entrance of Vic falls where we met our guide. We'd signed up to the Devils pool activity and we really hadn't been given much info so we weren't really sure what to expect. We all expected to be trekking on slippery rocks on the edge uphil. We had to walk but it was all dry, we were fairly close to the edge though, literally could often see right over the edge with nothing so much as a rope standing in the way! We walked about 1k with our guide who knew the best and safest route to take in his head, we walked past rainbow falls (not much water going over here in the dry season) and reached Livingstone island next to the main falls. A quick change and our guide was telling us to jump in a pool and follow him, we could see current flowing through and some water going over so the nerves were starting a bit at this point! There was the main falls just ahead coming from the next pools, bear in mind here there was quite alot more water flowing over the top and a big current sweeping through the centre of the pools! We headed towards it to the rocks in between! We had to swim against a noticeable current to get there too, there was a little rope though right at the edge but luckily we swam not too near this! So now the adrenaline was really starting to pick up!
Devils pool was a tiny but deep pool just to the left of this massive current plunging over vic falls as the main falls! There was nothing between that bit of sweeping water and the pool which had much less. There was still visible current though in this little pool and a fair amount of water falling so the heart was definitely pumping as we were told to leap into the centre of the pool towards the ledge which looks over the falls! Literally right on the edge of Vic Falls. Only our guide was in between us and the drop to begin with, no barrier no rope! I followed Lucy in and 6 of us had a photo sat on the edge of the pool right on the edge of the falls!! Then we had individual photos- this involved climbing flat onto the ledge so our chest was resting on this, we were looking down the falls! Only the guide was holding onto our feet! OH MY!!! it was incredible looking down as the water thunders over and seeing the two massive rainbows bellow us in the gorge!
We clambered back and after a refreshing bottled coke we headed back slower, stopping for a few photos again, right on the edge of the gorge!
This afternoon me Amy and Steph went for high tea at the Royal Livingstone Hotel, it was the most gorgeous posh hotel I'd ever seen! Buffet style savoury quiches and sarnies, scones and cakes, pianist and the best tea ever after having tea with powdered milk for 3 weeks. We were there munching and chatting for about 2 hours, a monkey ran through the dining hall, leaped over the buffet table and stole a scone before darting out the door! This provided us with a few laughs but the staff looked very annoyed at the regular disturbance! Naughty little monkeys! They're everywhere and little terrors but quite cute. Steph made us both quite emotional with her awesome stories from her Kili climb! Also a massive bonus was the amazing toilet! After some of the horrendous experiences over the past 3 weeks we had to take the time to enjoy spacious, tiled, sparkling clean facilities with soap and hand cream!!
We headed back to the waterfront and met up with our group for the last time.
Tonight will be hard to say goodbye to some really very good friends we've made here, it feels like we've known them for ages and shared such an amazing experience together. Hope to meet up with some of them again further around the world, 6 of us may meet up in Melbourne so that will be cool.
We head off tomorrow, not looking forward to the long journey- we leave 1.30pm and don't get to Bangkok until 8pm the next day but fortunately we have a nice hotel ready and waiting.
