We arrived yesterday in Livingstone, the Zambezi waterfront is gorgeous. Right on the water, very hot but with lots of mischievous monkeys about!
We were hoping to upgrade but this wasn't an option so we embraced tent life once again. There was a quick meeting about optional activities which turned out to be alot more stressful than we thought as alot of activities seemed to be full or nearly full and as a group of 22, people got a bit fractious! But it worked out well and everyone got on to do what they wanted in the end. Lots of people did white water rafting, some contemplated the bungee jump over the Victoria Falls, I signed up for combo of sunset river cruise, lion encounter and the Devils pool in the falls with the girls! :)
We did the sunset river cruise last night, 4.30- 7 ish. It was brilliant, floating down the Zambezi river as the sun set with a free bar and BBQ food, beautiful!
Today, after quite a few free 'Godfrey specials' on the cruise last night, we had to crawl out of our sleeping bags at 5.30 to head off to our lion walk. It was soooo worth it, probably the most incredible thing I've done! We had 3 lion cubs that were about 8 months and we were able to get up close and walk with them, watch them play and crouch down and stroke them when they were feeling lazier! It was a brilliant organisation, it was a rehab centre with the aim to rehab lions into prides that can be reintegrated back into the wild. This is a 4 stage process and in the first stage they are walked to gain their confidence in the bush and encourage their natural instincts. They are well cared for, we had a lot of rules to abide by for our safety and we had sticks, not to hit them but to distract them if they started eyeing us up! It was amazing being so close to a lion!! Nerve racking to begin with but so cool. We got to see them being very playful with each other and also lazier when the sun came out, when we were able to crouch down and stroke them. It was awesome!! It was so worth the money, brilliant morning!
It's scorching hot so I've grabbed a cold coke and am chilling out in the shade of the bar looking out over the mighty Zambezi! Tomorrow we head to the smoke that thunders :) can't wait!
