So, a few weeks earlier than I led everyone to believe I popped up in Guernsey. All organised with Tom, we thought it would be a nice surprise for family and friends and it gave us a good chance to deviously plan. I arranged to fly in 20 minutes before he arrived and met him in the baggage hall. Mum came up to the airport and I walked out behind Tom! Hiya! She was shocked and stood and stared before jumping up and down squealing. She was onto me though and thought I may do something like that, at least she bought me an Easter egg 'just incase'! Surprised grandma the next day at ours- hid for a bit and then walked into the lounge behind mum after saying 'hello grandma' her face was a picture :) smiles all around! Saw more family, and got some cuddles with baby Harrison which I was very much looking forward to! Got a lot of 'what are you doing here'. I managed to surprise the girls at training by walking in late and got a big group hug, and facetimed a few people starting off by letting on I was still in Aus and then revealing my location. All in all a great week of surprises, catching up and still looking forward to seeing more people.
Very happy to be back but it's a little strange- Guernsey feels very small! A little sad it's all over but it's been incredible, I've been very lucky to see the places I've seen, meet the people I've met and do the things I've done. Now I'm looking forward now to the next big adventure. Thankyou all for your comments and interest over the last 7 months!
N.b. post may now start getting a little cringy and reflective with some final musings!
I would encourage everyone to travel, see more of the world. Forget the day date and time for weeks on end. Learn about different cultures and do stuff in a day that's not part of the routine and that will stay with you in a lifetime. Just for a little while. Gain skills and experiences. Learn about how other people live and the ins and outs of different cultures. See how people cope well in a world without technology and the latest iPhone. See how big the world is but how small it is at the same time. Have no time restraints. Experience a new meaning of wildlife. Meet new amazing people and gain friends from all over the world. You're not 'escaping the real world', you are seeing some of the real world, first hand. The way I see it You have 45 + years to make a career why not have 44+ leave the bubble for a short time and have the time of your life!
Tips:
> Nivea sun cream is NOT Nivea In Aus! It's horrible and thick, go with banana boat!
> Always use leave in conditioner the hair will take a hammering
> Keep a diary or a journal to collect so many amazing moments
> Invest in a strapless bikini/ top because most of the time the biggest of your worries will be tan lines
> Don't be sucked in to buying knock off watches in thailand, maybe try your luck with one but give up before your 7 down, they are not built to last!
> It's not about how long you're away for it's what you do in that time I always said I'd prefer to do everything I want to do even if it means I run out of money and go home earlier than expected. No regrets!
> If you're going to travel with a friend make sure it's a true one, different to anything else with each other 24/7
> Collect moments not things
Sorry but I'd need 3 backpacks to bring back something for everyone
> You'll leave a little bit of your heart in many countries and with new friends from all over the world - but that's ok!
A few of the best feelings:
> Getting on a plane knowing your going somewhere completely new to you, where you can explore and be a stranger.
> Watching the sunset before the stars come out in the vast African skies after a day on the plains of the Serengeti.
> Seeing a breath taking sunset on the water and watching it rise again the next morning over one of the wonders of the world.
> Walking behind lions that are 'leading the pack'
> Leaning over the top of Victoria falls and looking down on a rainbow
> Realising I can breath 18m under water and taking in a wonderful new world
> Seeing a 4m bull shark drift over your head showing off an impressive set of teeth
> Getting flung out of a plane and free falling for 45 seconds
> Realising who will be sticking around as friends for life
... And ...Seeing the surprise on my family's face at home and giving them all a big hug :)
