Loved the Kruger area - it was sweltering hot (up to 38 degrees) so everything is really dry with many of the waterholes and riverbeds completely dry. Very bad for hippos and water dwellers but actually a bonus for predators who have an easier time finding food. Also a bit of a bonus for us for spotting wildlife as the grass is super short.
With six days in the park we didn't get tired of game spotting - but we didn't stop for every impala we saw after day 2! Different story with the cats though - which are pretty amazing. We have seen plenty including feeding on downed elephants and buffalo. And a leopard with its recent impala kill.
Different timetable here with early morning game drives (up at around 4am). The rest camps where we are staying at Skukuza and Letaba are awesome - right in the middle of the game, so we can spot hippos, crocs, water buffalo etc. while having dinner! Whenever you see a car pulled over on the road, it's a good clue that there is something to see. As well as all the animals we've seen a great selection of birdlife. Lauren has a book of some of the hundreds of birds and animals that can be found in the area and is ticking them off as she sees them.
Next stop was a private game reserve called Timbavati which borders Kruger. Wish we could share more photos of the incredible sights that we've seen with our guide Bernard…a pride of lions literally less than 3 metres from the landcruiser, three leopards wandering alongside, and of course all the 'more common' giraffes, elephants, zebra, kudu, impala, rhinos etc … Bernard and his tracker Jimmy have taken us well off road so we've really been able to just sit and listen to the wildlife up close. A highlight would have to be seeing an elephant calf suckling a few metres from us.
