I am sitting here for the first time alone in my hotel room. Up until now I was traveling with a friend in Indonesia. We parted a couple of days ago and I am now in Phuket Thailand. For the last couple of nights I stayed in patong beach, Phuket at bodega hostel sharing a 4 bed dorm. I met some cool people and had fun going out with them on my first night to watch the Germany and Portugal game. But I'll say this much. I never care to go back there again. It was sleazy and full of nightclubs and strippers. I attempted the beach the next day and was bombarded by vendors quite literally every 2 minutes. Their was 2 trucks moving slowly across the town blasting loud music and promoting Thai boxing. Not the chill factor I was seeking. Then it began to pour and I might as well jumped into a pool because that's how soaking wet I was trying to get back to the hostel. I know I'm in the wet season so that part didn't bother me as much as the vendors and the dirtiness of the town. This morning I left to go a bit further up north to a more chill part of Phuket called surin beach. I woke up today bitten almost entirely throughout my body. Bed bugs. Not Mosquitos. I guess that's just part of traveling although I do have a sarong I use to cover the bed but that didn't help and now I have to make sure I get that thing dry cleaned properly. The best part now has been the fact that I got out of patong beach and booked a hotel room in surin beach. My own room with a king size bed and balcony. I couldn't be happier. It cost me $25 to spend the night here at a 4 star hotel and I'm happier for it. I went down to the beach to grab some food and check things out. It's definitely a quieter town but not much to do which is fine. The beach looks like they are doing all sorts if construction so nowhere to really fully relax except my room. I am embracing this room and taking full advantage to cherish this time alone because tomorrow morning I leave for Bangkok and going back into a hostel.
I am realizing more and more how I would have preferred to travel. Doing 2 weeks per country and having tickets bought is not the way I'll ever do it again. I would rather let myself be open with no plans at all. It is way more freeing and allows you the space to figure out where you would like to be. I'm not going to say that the way I chose to travel will take anything away from me because this IS my journey. And it's been hard and it's been amazing. Growing is a beautiful thing.
