WE MADE IT!!! We arrived in Times Square about midday today! :)))
We managed to park the bikes in a pedestrian area and take a few snaps.
For the record:
- 4,198 miles in 20 days
- we averaged 48 mph which means 87-odd hours in the saddle (basically we haven't done anything else except sit on the bike for the last 3 weeks
- as the crow flies its only about 2,500 miles to LA, so we did a fair bit of swerving around!
On one hand, we are all very relieved to be able to stop travelling. It was great fun every single day and we were always kidding around and had smiles on our faces the entire time. Not a harsh word was spoken for the entire time even though we were living 3-to-a-room for the entire 2 weeks... testimony to how laid back Dodgy Dave and Ted-Ted are. A pleasure to ride with (although I won't miss Dave's Bo-Selecta impersonations :))
On the other hand, I for one, and I think the other fellas are the same, are a bit deflated that its over. We've handed the bikes back, took the train back into Manhattan, shook hands and have gone our separate ways.An experience unlikely to be repeated is at an end.
I think I'm going to have to wear my helmet around in the hotel room tomorrow just to feel at home.:))Its become a 'routine' that we've looked forward to over the last 3 weeks, each day very different to any other, and holding unknown surprises.
Its been an unbelievable experience: we've seen some amazing sights (every corner potentially held a new discovery), we've seen (some of) the breadth of peoples and lands of the US, we've met a lot of very friendly and hospitable people, we've sweated it out in the desert at 80mph, and shivered in Canada, we've stayed in some freaking dodgy motels, and we have finally experienced what Route 66 is all about…a snapshot of a golden bygone era of the US enshrined in buildings, people, towns, artefacts and stories.
What's next?:)
