Well, another pretty uneventful day! We did 297 miles today, and pretty much all of it was on Freeways, which made it a bit mundane.
There were a few things that raised our eyebrows along the way though :)
We didn't realise the pretty much everything in Ontario is named after good-old-mother-England. Today we passed: Essex, Middlesex, London, Cambridge, Chatham-Kent (lunch), Tilbury... and the list goes on. Dave-the-limey was chuckling all the way. (He still has sunburn spots on his hands from where the sun shone through the holes in his gloves in the desert :)
Today it also got really cold: down to 12 degrees! We had to stop at a servo to put on jumpers and thermals as the wind chill at 60 mph is about 21 degrees, so with the outside temp at 12 and us cruising at 70 mph, it felt like about -9 C. Today was the first day I actually got to werar the 'skull' bandana that the fellas got me... worked a treat!
I think I actually prefer the heat as all your body extremities still actually function rather than seize up…which is useful when the motorbike you're riding goes and stop using mostly your hands.
Its only when the temperature dropped today that it becomes really obvious that we have carved a giant diagonal from the bottom-left to the top-right of the US, and are actually a long way north of where started.JI know it sounds obvious, but we have had the same weather for 15 days and today was the first day it was cold and wasn't blue sky.So it was a sudden dawning for me anyway! :)
The chick on the Canadian Border passport-check must have been bored. We all went separately and all got 'questioned' to see if our stories added up. Luckily they did. :) And the hard-fought-for insurance documents from the hire company were not needed.
Riding into Toronto was great as the road comes over a hill and you get a great view of the city. The cloud was so low today that the top of the CN tower was lost in the clouds :) so all we could see was the column.(Tonight the cloud cleared and its been beautifully lit in colours that change every 10 seconds or so)
I did my homework this morning and wrote down the road numbers and names to get us to the hotel in Toronto I also booked this morning. This is a high risk strategy because if you miss the road you are supposed to be on, you're basically immediately lost.JSo I was pretty pleased that we didn't make a wrong turn all day, and following my nose through Chatham saw us on the right road purely by luck.We ended up at the motel in Chinatown in Toronto in one shot!JWe did have to exit one of the Freeways from the middle lane in quite a hurry at one point as we aren't used to the Canadian signage. In the UK and the US and Aus they put giant signs over the road to tell you about the exits. Here, they stick small signs on posts at the side of the road…and not many of them.So we were a bit lucky. :)
Tonight we've been out to sample some award winning beer (and it had to be to make the 10 block trek worth it!), and then back to Chinatown for dinner.
Tomorrow, Niagra Falls! :)))
