It was always going to be hard to top yesterday. But today seemed more boring than any other day. I think it was a combination of not a lot to stop and see (still fabulous scenery), a lot of miles travelled (about 240 today), and no radios.
My 'Push To Talk' (PTT) button broke yesterday, so this morning I went to a Radio Shack and bought a soldering iron to fix it tonight, which meant that for the entire day we couldn't talk to each other except when stopped. Made for a boring trip. I literally took only 20 pjhotos today (which is more than Ted has taken for the entire trip, but low by my standards :)
By the way, I managed to fix the PTT button tonight. And I am now the proud owner of a soldering iron... like I need to lug that across the US in my already-full bike. ?:)
Breakfast was funny. We stayed in the Road Runner Motel, which by anyone's standards was at the low end (it was 70 bucks for 2 rooms). Right next door was a Diner, so instead of riding anywhere, we just went there even though it wasn't the best looking. Well, it was probably the nicest breakfast we have had all trip! :) The cook greeted Ted in the carpark as I was taking some photos of the Motel and told us he was having a bad day as the waitress hadn't turned up and he didn't have keys to the cash register. After we sat and got a coffee the waitress turned up... she'd been at a music festival last night. :)
The waitress was bright and apologetic and took our orders, but as we were the only people in there she came over to chat to us. She asked where we were from etc etc and then told us that she rides a 450 off-road bike! And that she was called Victor by her father until she was 16 as her father wanted sons but got 3 daughters. :)
Right there we resolved to go into more dodgey breakfast places because the people are so much nicer and more 'real'. Victor was pretty much the opposite of Stacey the day before. The cook kept coming out to talk to us too. In all, a great fun breakfast with a real personal touch.
While at breakfast Ted laid down the challenge. We have now all signed up to a competition to see who can grow the most 'artistic' facial hair over the next 2 weeks. I've shaved twice already so Dave already has a week's head start on me. I have no idea about Ted, but I'm guessing that as he laid down the challenge he could probably pump out a five o'clock shadow before lunch. :) Its going to be interesting to see what the fellas think of lightining-flash sidies... ;))
Today we rode a good chunk of the old pre-1937 Route 66, and tonight finds us in Santa Fe. It looked pretty dire as we rode in, but tonight we found the old town (with directions) and it was fantastic! :) Its got a real old-time style that give the impression that it was the centre of the wild west in its hey-day. We found a nice outside restaurant by the noise the other patrons were making, so we knew it was going to be good before we got there. And it was. :)
We ticked over 1/3 distance at 1/3 the time we have, so feeling pretty comfortable; we have done almost 1400 miles in 7 days.
Tomorrow we're aiming for the half-way mark of Route 66 at Adrian, just to the west of Amarillo, Texas, and then on into Amrillo for the 72oz steak challenge! :) 72oz is 2.4kg, so I doubt I am ever going to make that, even if I starved for a week. Tomorrow we're also going to see the 10 Cadillacs buried nose first in the ground... a real Rt66 icon.
Amarillo is is 293 miles if we take the fast roads, but probably 320-330 if we take the old Route 66.
Its going to be a big day!
