Breakfast at 8.30am and a 5 minute walk to see the local beach at Raumati with Mary. The day started dull and cloudy but warm, at last the rain had stopped. There was no one on the beach, but there soon would be once the weather improved. Bob and Mary left at 9.30 to Wellington for the day to see their grand daughter Amy in her pre school Christmas production, leaving us with a couple of good ideas on what to see in the area.
First activity was a drive to another local beach. The sun came out as we walked along the beach, lots of driftwood washed ashore from recent storms. Henry decided to collect shellfish along the shore and I collected a few colourful shells to add to Mary's collection.
By lunchtime the sky was clear and we went off to the local supermarket to purchase steak and brie for tonight's tea.
Next stop, the local outdoor swimming pool for a swim. It was great, we swam for about an hour and met a local resident who had lived in Raumati for 5 years and had never been to the local pool! (She actually gave us both a hug when we left the pool). By the time we left, the pool was heaving with young people celebrating the start of the school Summer holidays. We asked the lifeguard if it was always this busy, she replied, this was nothing, wait till after Christmas.
Home at 3.30pm to put swim gear on the line and sat out in the sunshine on the new deck. Bob, Mary and Amy returned home at 5.00 pm and Amy, age 4, was keen to demonstrate her trampolining skills to all of us.
Henry handed over his catch of the day (shellfish). Bob referred to the Almighty Google to discover shellfish should be soaked in freshwater for 24 hours before consumption. Henry had been eating them fresh from the sea and lived to tell the tale.
While Amy watched TV and had tea we all indulged in wine o' clock with nibbles sat in the sunshine. You could get used to this.
Later Bob barbecued steak outside and Mary prepared potato salad with mint and basil and green salad (from their veg patch). Great meal, great food and company. A memorable evening, once again well past the N.Z. bedtime.
