We got to the 'Hot Rock' climbing shop at 8.45am to get fitted for our climbing gear. We walked to one climbing area but it was too busy so we went to an area by 'Phanang Cave'. This was a small but beautiful area to climb with views over the beach. We were in a small group of five climbers and two guides. When we began climbing we were split into two groups. Our group was us and a friendly chatty lady called Caitlin from South Carolina.
Jay climbed first but could not get too far up as his hands were sweaty and could not reach his chalk bag behind him. This was sorted when Jay was back down from the climb. Next to climb was Caitlin, as she started to climb a fourth person called Rolan from Amsterdam joined our group. Helen climbed after Caitlin and managed to get half way up the climb.
On our second climbs, we both managed to get well over half way. Jay was given a second attempt on the first part of the cliff due to what happened on his first climb. Helen's second climb was on a different part of the cliff. Jay's third climb was where Helen did her second climb.
Our final climb was on another part of the cliff where we both came within one final pull to the top of the climb. Neither of us was able to find that final grip to pull us up to the top.
We were each entrusted to hold the rope per climb, for one of the climb Jay held the rope whilst Helen climbed. Helen was scared that that Jay was not holding the
rope tightly enough and asked him to pull the rope tighter and this caused Jay to
have a rope burn.
In summary we found rock climbing physically enduring especially in the heat. The
most difficult part was finding places to put our feet and hands as some holes on
the cliff were too small. We both enjoyed the climbing experience, we felt lucky to
have had the opportunity to climb in what is considered one of the best places in
the world to do so.
After climbing we were very hot and sweaty, we went back to our room to have a
shower and cool off. We had lunch at the 'Sand Sea' restaurant where Jay had crab fried rice and loved it and Helen had fried fish with sweet and sour sauce, she
found the sauce to be quite salty but the fish was tasty. We both had a fruit punch to drink.
After lunch we bumped into John Tran (Jay's friend) from Philadelphia, we strolled
along the beach and then had drinks at a beach bar. After this we went to book the boat to Koh Samui (our next destination) which cost 450 THB each.
Later in the evening we met up with John to have dinner at the 'Yam Yam'
restaurant. We had papaya salad which was a local Thai dish that was spicy and tasty. We also had fried chicken, sticky rice, spring rolls and chicken and cashew
nuts served in a pineapple. We all enjoyed our dinner. During dinner we chatted about travelling and John gave us some tips about our planned destinations.
After dinner we went back to pack our stuff ready for Koh Samui.
