We arrived at Chiang Mai at 6am, when we got off the bus we went on a pick up truck which was full of Mosquitos. The pick up truck took us directly to the street where our guesthouse was for 30 THB each. We found our accommodation after walking a few minutes down the street. This was a lovely and clean privately owned cottage with only six rooms for guests. It was surrounded by a security fence and had a lovely garden. We had a shared bathroom (4 shower rooms) where it was modern and clean. We stayed in a ground floor, garden view room. It was one of the cleanest rooms we have stayed in.
We had a one hour nap to 'recharge our batteries', we struggled to get up as we were so tired. When we did eventually get up, Ratree the co-owner of Finlay's Cottage made us breakfast. We both had muesli with papaya and yoghurt, it was so fresh and delicious. We got chatting to the other owner, Keith from England about what to do and see in the city.
We walked to 'Thapae Gate', this was an entrance to the city centre which was surrounded by a moat and is now partially surrounded by what remains of the wall. We walked through this gate to head for the main temple of Chiang Mai, 'Wat Chedi Luang'. On the way there, Jay spotted a smaller temple which he wanted to have a look at. This was an old looking dark wooden temple, with a brilliantly white and immaculately clean pagoda next to it. This was the first time we had seen either of these and they were really beautiful. We saw a lot of monks working around the area to maintain it.
We later arrived at Wat Chedi Luang', we were very impressed with the ruin of the temple. We noticed that there were many young monks around this temple.
As it was so hot, we went to get out of the heat and had drinks at the 'Hot Chilli' bar restaurant. This place had a beautiful decor which included a couple of swing seats at the edge of the restaurant. Helen jumped straight onto a swing seat and loved it as it was comfortable. We waited for the sun to start setting before heading back to Wat Chedi Luang to capture the sunset.
After seeing a beautiful sunset, we went back to our accommodation to book a day trip with 'Jungle Flight' (zip wiring through the rainforest) which cost 2290 THB each.
We had dinner at 'Aroon Rai' restaurant, this was recommended by Keith and it was a good recommendation! Jay had a local curry with chicken and potato and Helen had pork and ginger curry. They were both amazing with full of flavours, one of the best curries we have had on this trip and by far the cheapest (50THB / £1 per curry).
After a delicious dinner, we walked to the 'Saturday Night Market' which was on 'Wua Lai Road'. It was a very big market and we were surprised at how cheap everything was compared to Southern Thailand. Jay bought some tasty rice crackers from this market which cost 20 THB to snack on.
