Took a public bus from Ho Chi Minh City across the mighty Mekong river on a ferry into Cambodia. Seven hours to Phnom Penh!!
Cyclo orientation ride around city then to F.C.C (Foreign Correspondants Club) with veiws over Mekong river for a few cocktails. Dinner at "Friends", a street kids project with some wonderful artwork on the walls.
The following day went to visit two of the most sombre sights of our trip. Firstly Mr Ran our guide took us to Tuol Sleng (S-21) a former school turned into an interrorgation and torture centre of the Pol Pot Regime (1975-1979) . A macabre collection of photos, torture objects and machines, the actual beds and cells with shackles still in situ. Acconts of the brain washed boy soldiers who cut out the livers of the victims and ate them and sending the gall bladders to be used in Chinese medicine. Then a short trip out of the city to the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum. This place revealed the true extent of Pol Pots insanity 17,000 people killed and "buried" in mass graves on this site alone.Accounts of babies having their heads bashed against "The Killing Tree" while mothers watched before their own death. Gruesome methods of murder were used, anything to save bullets. These fields of pits are strewn with bone fragments and clothing on the pathways, eroded by the rains. It is a surreal feeling walking on these remains. At the front of the complex is sited a monument called the Stupa containing 8,985 excavated skulls.
For some light relief went to a televised kick-boxing tournament, great fun!!!
Mr Ran had us all round his house on stilts for tea , sat on mats on the floor to eat. He treated us to some deep fried tarantulas lovely...
