Today we will explore Puerto Montt, then leave for Puerto Varas in search of adventure.
We eat breakfast with the Canadian couple and a European. As we were eating, Casa Perla became invaded by Asians that decided to check in plenty early. The bathroom, the kitchen, the hallways were invaded!! It took us a bit longer to get checked out.
Darren and I look for a place to do our laundry, but are not lucky so we store our bags at the bus station. Now, we venture across the bay to a little island called Isla Tenglo. It has a huge cross at the top of the hill that glows at night. It looks like the view up there would be spectacular. We pay a man to boat us to the island and on the other side we admire the seashells and boats stuck in the low tide. With help from a friendly dog (I named him Goldie), we find the path to hike up the hill. Goldie led us the entire way and didn't even expect anything in return - just good company. At the top we see magnificent views of Puerto Montt and the ocean. It is peaceful here; only Goldie, Darren and I sat while watching the gentle waves of the ocean.
We take a different trail down the hill and lose Goldie. At the bottom another man rows up and offers us a ride back to the main land for a small fee.
There is this big, rusty red building on the main land with a market and a plethora of restaurants. As we walk through the building, we are asked if we are hungry and want to eat. There must be 50 small restaurants in here. We pick one outside overlooking the bay and enjoy the fresh fish meal with a bottle of wine. Darren spots a sea lion below and runs to take pictures. He shows all of the kids the pictures of the sea lion and the Chilean parents just nod and give him a 'crazy, white boy' look. Haha.
Now it is time to find a bus to Puerto Varas. We walk back to the bus station past many more kiosks filled with wool, wool products, jewelry and souvenirs. We find a mini-bus that will take us there for only a few dollars.
We miss our stop at Puerto Varas' Centro, but this gives us an excuse to walk along the beach. Puerto Varas is located on South America's third largest lake, Lago Llanquihue. Two volcanos are visible across the lake and another large cross soars at the top of a hill. Darren and I jump into the lake to cool off because it is so warm. This makes me wonder what back home is like; we are in bathing suits and back home we would be wearing parkas and chattering our teeth at the -40 degree weather. Now, this is sweet!!
The trek back to the Centro is long, but scenic. We walk past beach after beach with our big backpacks on. We arrive at our hostel and check in. This place, Hospedaje Ellenhaus, is a maze as we are escorted to our room. On the third floor, we arrive at our room and we are unsure if we'll be able to find our way out. We do our laundry in sink in our room. It's really quite simple to wash our clothes. The sink has an associated (possible) drying counter, which makes scrubbing clothes easy. The only challenges are keeping water in the plug-less sink and hanging our clothes to dry.
Now, we seek adventure! We really wanted to come to Puerto Varas because we read about canyoning. We don't have this at home, so I really want to try it. We walk to the adventure shop and book ourselves in for canyoning tomorrow.
For supper, Darren and I ate at Pim's, an Irish inspired pub that overlooks the lake. We order a platter with wings, battered jalapeños, cheese quesadilla and potato skins. It is okay, but not excellent.
I finish the night off with a trip to the casino. It was raved about in the Lonely Planet book; however, it looks like every other casino, so I didn't stay long. I would rather sleep and keep my energy for canyoning tomorrow!!!
