Ah, Venice! I've got to admit that I was far from convinced when I got here yesterday, I spent the late afternoon on the streets near the Rialto, and they're very narrow and crammed with shops selling tourist tat. I DID manage to find a lovely taverna which furnished me with a rather delightful glass of Tuscan red wine, but I still felt a little underwhelmed. That all changed this morning though, when I went out early to St Marks Square, before the tour parties descended, and THAT was the Venice I was looking for!
After a quick caffe latte, I wandered around St Marks Basilica. Very beautiful inside, but I'm glad I pre-booked my ticket as the queue was ginormous!
I then decided to wander for, literally, hours and stumbled upon the church used in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which was quite exciting, but sadly neither Sean or Harrison were anywhere to be seen! So I cheered myself up with more coffee and a sfogliatelle, a crispy pastry filled with ricotta. Very nice!
After yet more wandering, I found myself at the Accademia, the main Art Gallery here, but instead of going in I sat outside and listened to a woman playing the cello. Beautiful.
