Hayley & Holly On Tour 2006
Hello everybody,
We are currently in Franz Josef Glacier- the second of our two glaicer visits in New Zealand. When we left you last we had half a day left in Fox Glacier.
We went out the evening after our glacier climb and rewarded ourselves with burgers that had the best chutney like sauce in them, the burgers themselves were the size of our heads- a perfect reward!
After a good nights sleep- helped along with some beer- we decided to do a hike down to see some fur seals. It was roughly a three and a half hour hike which eventually took us over four. The walk took us through grassland- accompanied by some sheep, along a beach, through a lagoon and into the rainforest where the games really began. Due to wetness of the rainforset part of the tracks were quite difficult to pass, there was a lot of balancing on sticks and stepping from rock to rock to avoid falling in thick mud- needless to say this didnt quite go to plan- we had feet in mud, slips off twigs and a complete slip off a rock onto the butt (luckily my butt provided a soft landing!). We did both manage to get over a stream on the way and the way back without any mishaps! To access the beach we had to put our climbing skills into practice and clamber down the rocks and over a tree truck and would you believe once we reached the beach were there any seals- were there hell as like. It would appear they had all gone out for sunday lunch!!
So we ate our sandwiches and made the return journey- but even wihtout the appearence of the seals it was still a fun walk- the challenges just made it that little bit more interesting!
After our walk we headed onto Franz Josef Glacier and settled into our campsite and chilled out for the evening. Today we decided to go and visit the glacier here- no walking on the glacier this time we just toook some walks to look out points to get a few more photots (the slide show is coming along a treat!). We also took in a couple of other walks, the Douglas Track and a Lake Wombat, as the one we had orignally wanted to do was closed due to a rock fall destroying a stairway.
We are now cleaning our shoes after the mud incident and preparing ourselves for our 6 hour drive tomorrow to Kaikora. So until then...
Missing you all lots
Holly and Hayley
