Hayley & Holly On Tour 2006
Go Red Sox!
Hello all, this is our last day in Boston, Massechusetts and I still can't spell it! We've had a lovely week here and beautiful weather so we've been busy topping up our tans before we arrive home in just over a week. We're staying in Everett which is north of Central Boston but only a bus ride and a couple of Subway stations from the city centre. It's quite large but also has a small town feel, we go and have breakfast at a diner called Dempsey's every morning and the same lovely lady serves us every morning, she even remembers that we have one tea and one coffee now! Our hostel is called the Prescott and is also fine. Only $30 a night which here seems pretty reasonable and there are only three of us in our six bed dorm so it's all good.
We have done a few touristy things here, went to Cheers for lunch (but not one person knew our names, think it was Sam's day off as he was nowhere to be seen and we weren't served by Carla - luckily!) and we brought a t-shirt each of course! The burgers there were good, think mine was named after Norm. We forced down a huge vanilla fudgey dessert between us as well, such troopers. We have just about adjusted to the size of American meals and learned the hard way about side orders. Not necessary...ever.
We have also been to the JFK Memorial Library and Museum. There are many of them around the country dedicated to several Presidents in their home towns. JFK was from MA (not trying to spell it again!) and graduated from Harvard so he's quite big here. Think the fact that he's one of the most influential men of the 20th century also helps raise the profile. The museum was only $10 and we were there for over three hours watching videos of JFK's inaugral speach, debates with Nixon, learning about the space race and the Cuban missile crisis - glad I missed that one, phew! It was actually rather moving to hear him spek on some of the issues, he was clearly so passionate and it's tragic when you get round to the part when he was asassinated and see the newsreader wipe a tear as he speaks the words. Also didn't know that he established the Peace Corps. Every day is a school day isn't it?!
The other day we walked the Freedom Trail which is a 2.3 (or 4!) mile walk around Boston and Charlestown which takes you passed 16 points of interest to do with the American Revolution. Sadly the British don't come out of it well, but I'm sure they thought they were doing the right thing at the time! We got to see some beautiful areas of Boston, even the Starbucks and the 7 Eleven have been designed so that they don't look out of place on the streets.
Yesterday we spent a lazy day just hanging out (oh Lord I have been here too long!) in Boston Common. It was Memorial Day here which doesn't seem to mean much besides it being the first official day of Summer. The park was full of families and people like us and the weather was perfect for a bit of people watching. We like to make up stories about people we see!
Today we went to Harvard planning to take a free tour around the university, however there are no tours for another three weeks so we went shopping instead! Holly got such a bargain in Macy's and we both finally got sunglasses so our retinas can stop frying now! We ended up back in Boston Common with a hummous bagel and a Starbucks. Since we have only one more week we've decided it's more of a holiday now so relaxation is the key, well at least until we get to New York when I think things might get a little crazy again!
Must go now, time to pack again sadly. Last time though before we're winging our way back to English soil. We're thinking happy thoughts about Wayne Rooney being fit all the way across the sea!
Lots of love
Hayley & Holly
