Christmas on Ko Phangan,
I was panicking a little as we hadnt booked New Year accommodation or Christmas and everywhere on line was full. I think fate was stopping me booking it! As when we arrived on Ko Phangan we went to a beach suggested by Shelly and Matt called Haad Yao one of the nicest beaches on the island and far away from the business of Hat Rin. The tuk tuk dropped us off outside Haad Yao Resort and it was the first one we went it. We asked how much and they said 600Baht, we got them down to 500Baht and went and checked the room out. It was amazing! Exactly what we wanted and had talked about for Christmas! I was a lush hotel room nicer than i've even ever stayed when booking a week holiday, marble bathroom, tiled floors, Sky T.V with christmas movies and movie channel, the hotel was literally on the beach, the restaurant chairs and tables were in the sand with water over your freet. It had hot water something we havent had yet in a long while. Flushing toilet? Bonus, saves us washing our own excritement down with a bucket next to the loo which is what we have been doing in all the bamboo huts we've been staying in! Great family owned hotel who are super friendly and work round the clock. Plus the food in the hotel is great value for money top quality! For 5 pounds each per night it was like our little christmas present from above and needless to say we didnt look around. We stayed in a bamboo hut for the same price in Ko Lanta, This by far is the best value stay we've had in our whole trip! ooooh Huge double bed and a single bed which we greedily put together to make one gigantic bed! It really did fee like Christmas as we spent many nights chillen in our gorge hotel room, eating biscuits and watching movies.... just like being on holiday!
Ko Phagnan is a beautiful island, I thouh people just came here to party for the full moon, but many people i've spoken to arent even going to a party, lots of family's and couples etc. Its quite quiet actually, this being their peak season an all not that many people on the beach or about even in Hat Rin which is weired. On Christmas Eve me and Mike went our separate ways and went Christmas shopping for each other. I must have lost my mojo as i'm normally great with ideas for people for Christmas especially Mike, but I missed 1 big hint - fireworks? Should have got him those! And Nuts or Zoo magazine as we havent read a magazine in ages, plus they are more expensive over here. Damn. Anyway I got him some tennis balls on string to practice fire dancing as all the Thais do that over here with a ball of fire on a string, Mikes impressed so I thought he could learn, I also got him some Haribo and other random jelly sweets as thats his weakness in the goody world. And... oh year a rasta knitted head band to calm his growing mane! Not much really I wanted to get him a good book, a funky keyring man for his backpack but couldnt see them. I was very lucky I got a pear of earings with an anklet to match, a purple dress, orange funky top, Heat Magazine! Buzzing of that present not upto date with everything you see! We had bought wrapping paper so it was a little christmassy, Home Alone was on the T.V and we wore our Christmas hats all day, which people on the island found amusing. Not very Christmassy here, the odd christmas tree and New year Decoration but they only try for the westerners.
Christmas Dinner
I had turkey with all the trimmings and Mike had a long awaited steak which we would never spend our money on unless it was Christmas. Mine cost more than Mikes! We had it an the Mason Arms which is this random English Pub on Ko Phangan in the middle of no-where with a beer garden out front and back, English radio and tunes, and full english menu including chip butties! English pool table, darts table etc. It was great if you let yourselve you could imagine it being back home. It was full of westerners mainly Enlgish and it was funny to hear all the English accents altogether in the middle of Thailand! We drank all day but paced our selves and went to the internet cafe and did all the phone calls on Skype which I have finally set up since being here! Cant figure out how to switch on the webcam though? I see other people using them over here but doesnt seem to work for us. Its quite cloudy here and it actually rained on Christmas day even though it was hot and humid. Typical still it adds to making it more Christmassy I suppose! Just chillin today. Tims coming over on 28th so we've booked him in here at the hotel. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year!
