Friday 15th April
As we were already at our destination for today we didn't have breakfast till 7.30. We also had some visitors outside the boat - 3 big black tip sharks. A pelican landed on the sea and the shark went for it!
First we had a panga ride to see the galapagos penguins but they were all hiding! We then went on land to Isla Bartalome; just off Sullivan Bay. There was a big dominant male sea lion on the pier who didnt seem to impressed with us so we had to climb over the rocks. We walked through a trail of wild and unearthy looking lava up to the top where the lighthouse is to get the 'postcard picture' of the Galapagos! It was so hot today! We then had time to snorkel where we saw sharks, galapagos penguins (sometime in the distant past a population of penguins followed the cool Humbolt current up the west coast of South America from Antarctica and became established in the Galapagos. The most northerly penguin in the world and the only species that lives at the equator) and lots of fish. A little family of sea lions was also swimming with us!
Back on board we had time to chill out and have lunch (we saved some lunch for the sharks!) We fed the sharks and all 3 came along! They were between 5-8ft long!
At 3pm we went onto Sullivan Bay; on Santiago Islands east coast. Here, a huge, black, century-old lava flow has solidified into a sheet that reaches to the edge of the sea. We did a 2km trail on the lava where we saw uneroded volcanic formations, such as lava bubbles and tree trunk moulds in the surface. We then had some time to chill in the beach.
Back on board we showered and had dinner. After our briefing we began watching a Galapagos documentary but couldn't keep our eyes open! I had got pretty sunburnt today when we were snorkelling; even with loads of suncream on! The backs of my legs and the bottom of my back where my lifejacket stopped were quite bad!
