Thursday 14th April
So we were supposed to be up at 6 to do a 2 hour trek but the wake up call never happened! 7am the bell went but the boat was still moving so I went up and everyone was having breakfast. Lotte and Bari's room had flooded about 3am; they went to tell the captain and the crew then realised one of the engines had failed and the boat was flooding! So we were well off schedule, we now didn't arrive at North Seymour Island until 8.45 and some people in the group were panicking as they had a flight at 11.15!
We got off at North Seymour; A 1.9-sq-km island where we did a small trail for an hour and saw blue footed boobies, frigatebirds (the largest seabirds colony in the archipelago, with wingspans reaching 2.3m they are dazzling fliers. They make their acrobatic living by fishing, they sometimes harass smaller seabirds into dropping or regurgitating their catch) It was mating season too so we got to see males in their nests with their red balloons-sized flaps of skin under their bill out flapping their wings to attract females!) and Land Iguanas (yellowish in colour their preferred food is cactuses. Once abundant on several islands, land iguanas have suffered greatly from the depredations of feral dogs and pigs)
Back on board we sailed to the airport where 5 got off, the boat was repaired and someone new got on! We had lunch and sailed to Black Turtle Cove; has many little inlets and is surrounded by mangroves. We had to stay on the panga for this; we went in search of sea turtles, sharks and ray's but only managed a glimpse of some turtles and sharks as the water was not clear due to all the rain fall in the last few days :-(
We then set sail to Isla Bartalome at 3pm so that we could be anchored for dinner and bed and we both slept brilliantly!
