Train and ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima Island. Another beautiful island and this time it is covered in tame deer! Deer came up to us as soon as we stepped off the ferry, deer tried to steel our lunch and ate the map and tried to get into the temple, they are great fun. We got in our flip flops and went out to the torii, bare foot on the sand and shingle was heavenly after the miles we have walked. The torii is particularly beautiful and when the tide is in looks like it is floating on the water. We also visited the Itsukushima Shrine and five-story Pagoda. We then had the crazy idea of getting the cable car up Mount Misen. The views were beautiful but it was terrifying and we walked back down the mountain in our flip flops. It was half past six time we climbed down the mountain and the hustle bustle of tourists, shops and restaurants had disappeared and it was like a ghost town. Luckily we found a restaurant open and enjoyed amazing oyster meals before walking back admiring the torii lit up in the dark and seeing all the deer sleeping. Back at the hotel it was time for a wash before bed and this was our first hotel with an onsen, communal bathing area. I read the instructions in my guide book and headed on down. It really is the most strange thing being naked with strangers and sitting on stools showering (don't worry I didn't take the camera!).
