Hatman: We have made it to Camdodia!
We arrived in Phnom Penh to bucketing rain! Thankfully, Steve Glick, had kindly come to meet us and pick us up in his clean, cold and dry car! We had a lovely evening in Steve's beautiful house with his golden retriever Sam. Sam like us was very excitable and so we all got on a treat. In need of a little break of noodles and rice it was wonderful to have burritos for dinner which was washed down with a delicious G & T. After a fantastic sleep in a comfy, CLEAN bed we went to see the genocide museum. I think it was the first time we had both been quiet for a long period of time throughout the trip. We were both stunned by the horrors and realities of what had happened there. We then took a tuk-tuk to the killing fields which again silenced us with the temple containing 9 tiers of skulls and further tiers of other bones.
Feelng pretty drained and hot we went back to Steve's house where we tried to order some food from Freebird but failed. Instead we sent them an email with our order but didn't get a reply. However, that evening we went for a wonderful meal with Steve at a Tapas restaurant on the riverside where Al and I being Chevron fans quized Steve on how we could get involved. All the delicious Spainish food was washed down with some Sangria. Steve then took us to an amazing bar called the FCC where he shared his advice on where to go in Sien Reap and where we can get margaritas for $1.50! We then went home excited to choose a film from Steve's mind-blowing DVD collection. It was always going to be an old classic and Steve kindly complied...Somethings Gotta Give!
After another terrific nights sleep we wondered downstairs to find a lady from Freebird (the take-away food company) outside the gate. She had been waiting 2 hours outside for us to wake up to appologise for not picking up the phone or replying to our email and kindly offered us some complementary food. Al and I both feeling awful that she had waited so long but also slightly excited at the prospect of being able to order whatevever we want both ordered huge sandwiches and ice-tea. After our delivery arrived we set out on our next adventure and left the comfort of Steve's beautiful home.
We got the bus stop and discovered we has missed alll the buses to Mondulkiri so checked-in at a hostel. We wondered along the rverside and stumbled across a bar with $2 mojitos. W spent the rest of the afternoon there, watching the rain and met some Americans. We woke early the next morning to catch our bus to Mondulkiri. After a bumpy 6 hours we arrived and booked into a little hostel where we sleep in a little bungalow. Desperate to have a day with elephants we booked onto an elephant trek for the following day.
After a great sleep in our little bungalow and a delicous breakfast of pancakes we went to meet the elephants. Our elephant was called Mikon, we renamed him Mike Tyson for his strength, beauty and shear intelligence. Mike Tyson was led by an 8 year-old boy, Nap. Al and I sat in a little thatched wooden carriage perched on the top of Mike Tyson. Our friends an Italian couple were on an elephant behind which was being led by Naps five-year-old little brother and his father. Mike Tyson trundled along through the forest pulling down trees. The further into the forest we got Al and I became more excited to get to the waterfall as our bums had become numb sitting on the wooden bench. We arrived at the waterfall. Mike Tyson was then washed in the waterfall which was amazing to watch but we were both desperate to get involved and help. We quickly demolished our rice and "chicken" curry and jumped off the rocks into the waterfall pool to cool off. We were then joined by Nap, his brothers and father. We had a fantastic time jumping off the rocks, watching the boys do back-flips off a tree trunk and trying to teach the youngest brother to swim. We then lay in the sun to dry off while the elephants went for a wonder. The boys went to collect the elephants and brought them back to the waterfall to wash them both. Al and I were both hugely excited when we were allowed to go into the pool and help clean and wash the elephants. It was wonderful being able to be so close and play with these huge animals. We couldn't believe what was happening!
After the elephants had been washed we got back on Mike Tyson and begun the trek back home. Nap sung to us the whole way home but Al and I didn't mind as we were both still beaming at the afternoons adventures. We arrived back from the trek and were picked up by our very friendly guide who had proposed to Al earlier! After booking our bus to Sien Reap for the followng day we wondered up to the supermarket to get some dairylea, baguettes, crisps and a bottle of gin for dinner. On the search for tonic as the supermarket didn't have any we popped into a bar but discovered they too had run out. Instead we settled on banana and pineapple milkshakes with gin. We also met some Asian business men who kindly gave us some delicious sandwiches filled with lots of meat and cheese, English tea and water all from Raffles hotel in Phnom Penh!
Fantastic day! One neither of us will be forgetting anytime soon!
Love to all xoxo
