Following an excellent week in Hong Kong we arrived in Singapore late Friday evening. Singapore airport is absolutley huge, a tourist attraction in itself. On arrivial through passport control you are greeted with a mini tropical jungle!
We decided to dedicate our Saturday to wildlife. In the day time we visited Singapore zoo, famed for its naturalistic layout. It is a great zoo with so many different animals to see. Highlights included the False gahrial (a crocodile found in Malaysia that resembles a creature from Jurassic Park and facinated us both) two Polar bears and a family of Manatees , both of which Mandy had never seen before. We also fed the elephants bananas, and had our picture taken with four Orangutans (whilst we are in Malaysia we hope to visit Orangutan Island).
In the evening we went next door to the Singapore night safari. It is the worlds first nocturnal zoo and can be explored on foot via three walking trails or by a tram. The night safari was amazing. It was very dark and a thunderstorm overhead added to the atmosphere. Mandy and I convinced ourselves that thge torrential rain would have broken the electrical fences and the animals would be roaming free! We especially enjoyed the magnificent Malaysian tiger and a walk through the bat bat cave where fruit bats and flying foxes flew around freely (but none of them landed on my head Dad it must have been attracted to your bald spot!!).
On Sunday we joined up with the rest of our group for the start of our Intrepid tour. The group is only small with an English woman called Manjit, an Aussie woman called Shannon, an Aussie guy called Stuart, with our tour guide Pete a Chinese woman living in S.E Asia. Our hotel was located in the Little Indai district of the city and is an area bustling with people, never before have we been to a place so busy. We ended our short stay in Singapore by joining the local muslims at a fast breaking meal where we ate Lomang, a sticky rice dish mioxed with coconut popular in Malaysia.
