As we start heading towards Milford Sound we pass through the Gibson valley, well known for the Pinot Noir that thrives in this region due to the hot summers and dry winters.
On our way we take a quick stop at the airport of Queenstown where we not only pick up two new travellers from Luxemburg, but also MY BAG. It was an emotional reunion, and I was happy to have my bag again. At our lunch break in Te Anau I had to quickly prepare my day-pack as we were only going to take these on the boat on Milford Sound where we would spend the night.
The lake by Te Anau is actually one of the deepest lakes in New Zealand, with a depth of over 400 meters at some places.
As we basically spend the whole afternoon in the busthere is not much exciting stuff happening until we arrive at the Milford Sound, which is actually not really a Sound, but rather a fjord. The mountainous scenery of especially the last part of the drive is simply magnificent with a lot of snow along the road. The tour before us (of the previous week) had not been able to go all the way to the Sound due to massive amounts of snow...
On the boat we had a nice trip, and one of the crew members explained several particularities of the Sound and the nature that can be found there. Before dinner there was an opportunity to go kayaking or make a trip on a speed-boat to further explore the fjord.
After a good evening dinner, the rest of the evening was filled with a "speed-dating" competition, which did not really involve dating, but rather served to get to know the other tour members a bit better. It was really funny and was indeed a good way to come in contact with all participants!
