Hi All,
A quick hello from the most southern point of our trip. Right now we're in Punta Arenas. In Chili they call it the most southern city in the world (in Argentina they say it is Ushuaia). We don't care, we are happy not to live in either of these cities as the temperature is around 5 degrees even in summer! But apart from that, we had an amazing week in Patagonia. El Calafate was our first stop. We were there to visit the Perito Moreno, a beautiful glacier and one of the Patagonian highlights. The tour we booked was a 4 hour hike on the glacier with so called crampons (spikes) under your hiking boots. The weather was perfect and the views excellent.Only the crampons left me with two big steaks, as they call blisters in the gym in Montpellier, France ;o) The day after we left for a 5 day hike, called the W-trail. When we arrived at the starting point, we asked for the weather forecast: 10 days of very bad weather, with rain and snow. Although we were well prepared (good gear and booked all our shelters in advance), this was still a big disappointment. However one English guy told us "Never believe the weather forecast,. Whatever they say, they're usually wrong!". And it turned out to be right. The next day the rain had stopped, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. During the 5 days walking from shelter to shelter, we had only 1 day of rain. So if you ever go to Torres del Paine, I hope they predict bad weather ;o)
We walked the W together with a very nice German couple Heiko and Melanie. Heiko proposed to Melanie on theW-Trail, I didn't know German guys were so romantic.
See you at the next blog from Santiago.
