Hi All,
Buenos Aires in spring is amazing! We have spent a week here, and there is so much to see and do, that we haven't had any blog-writing-time yet. So a short update before we leave for the South, starting with the Salar de Uyuni, definitely one of our highlights in South America.
We did a tour in a 4WD Jeep crossing the desert from Uyuni in Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama in Chili. The landscapes literally took our breath away at 4.000 to 5.000 m. We started with the salt lake; it's like a bright white ocean of salt with small islands of cacti. From there we went to beautiful colored lakes with flamingos. The last day we visited the geysers and had a nice dip in the thermal baths before getting on the bus to Chili. We only stayed in Chili for 2 days, which was more than enough for San Pedro 'Tourist Trap' de Atacama. The place is packed with tour agencies, hotels and restaurants which all have one thing in common… they are bloody expensive, especially when coming from Bolivia.
After this, arriving in Salta (Argentina) meant coming back to some usual standards. Like flushing the toilet paper, drinking a good cup of coffee in the morning and foremost normal altitudes (finally below 2.000m). The first thing we did in Salta was testing the steak. The best steaks in the world arguably come from Argentina and as the proof of the pudding is in the eating we had lunch in a nice steakhouse. The Argentineans say that their beef is so tasty because the cows are on a special diet and have more space. Well we don't know what it is but according to us; Yep you get the best steaks in Argentina!
Buenos Aires is a big, lively city (more than 12 million inhabitants). There are many different neighborhoods that all deserve at least a day of exploring. So we skipped Colonia in Uruguay and had a full week of the Argentinean capital. We started with a day trip to San Antonio de Areco (an hour drive from BA), known as the village of the Gauchos (South American cowboys). We had a perfect day, also because it was the annual 'Dia de la Tradicion' with traditional horse games and of course .. muchos Parilla's (Barbeques!).
Sunday we went to the match of Boca Juniors (Diego Maradona's soccer club) against Colon from Santa Fe in the Bombonera stadium. The match was crap, but the atmosphere great. The rest of the week consisted of a lot of walking through the different neighborhoods visiting museums, parks, bars, shops and restaurants (did we already mention they have great steaks here?).
Tomorrow, wakeup call at 4 o'clock to get on the plane to El Calafate. From 25˚C and sunny to 5˚C and rainy... at least we didn't bring our rain coats and thermal underwear for nothing ;o)
See you at the next blog from Santiago!
