Yesterday was a quiet at home day to catch up on domestic chores, but also because a cold weather front came in that dropped the temperatures down to single digits and I did not want to risk the weather while still having the tail end of a cold. Still, it was nice to stay warm inside and curl up with some magazines and music.
Today I'm off to MoMA, for more amazing art. It's another cool day so it made sense to stay somewhere warm and protected.
I like this art collection a lot as there is a lot of wow! with a smaller collection of art (compared to the MET). I have seen the big ticket pictures before (Van Gogh il poste and the starry night, monets monumental Lillies) so this time I spent more time with the pop art, and design displays. It was beautiful to spend time in the sculpture garden which still has patches of flowering purple violets and tulips.
I decided to treat myself to a nice lunch at the modern, the Michelin starred restaurant attached to the art gallery. They specialize in an all small plates menu of modern food! I ordered quail terrine with a fennel and grapefruit salad, and then had beer braised pork belly with pea purée and sticky sauce mmmmmm. It's been a bit of a treat to be able to indulge in some of the best restaurants in New York. The secret is to go for lunch (same menu much cheaper) and if possible do a prix fixe lunch. The Modern doesn't offer this but you still can order carefully so your costs don't get crazy - both dishes I ordered were under $20, and they were small but more than enough to satisfy.
I then decided to walk from MoMA back to grand central, this part of town is known as the diamond district, and I walked past Radio City music hall, the Rockefeller centre, saks, and other midtown shops. To be honest I don't like this area, it's very touristy, the shopping is not good (I guess you don't spend money) and its always in shadow because of all the skyscrapers. I have deliberately avoided these parts of New York on this trip, so I guess it's done and I can tick midtown off my list of areas as explored! I'm returning back home before the temperatures plummet again tonight, expecting single digit overnight lows which my cough does not like.
