I feel like last nights events deserve a whole blog entry dedicated to it.
After finally finding a sharp knife to cut our potatoes with (unlike the blunt table knife we have to use) I was shocked to find it has another, and rather alternative, use. Its the chicken decapitator!
So Nadine and I were just casually watching TV when we heard this strange noise in the kitchen that we thought was a goat. Which actually wouldn't be too unusual around here seeing a there are lots of free roaming cattle lining the roads. Much to our surprise it was a chicken, blissfully unaware of the fate it was about to meet.
Our host Sewela asked us if we wanted to watch this chicken being killed, and kinda sadistically we did. It's an experience we weren't going to get in the UK! So we watched and we were quite traumatised by the whole experience especially because earlier we cooked a chicken curry that we were planning on eating later. I now fully understand the meaning of 'running around like a headless chicken'. We filmed the killing although (Nadine was slightly useless with the torch), you can find it under the 'videos' section of my blog.
Ok so killing over, the smell in the kitchen while the chicken was being cut up is a smell I will never forget. Another thing I now understand is how wasteful we are in the west. There was honestly not a single part of the chicken that would not be eaten... Even the head and the feet! It is such a cheap way to feed the family when you take into account that the chicken in its alive state cost only R50 (less than £3.50).
So that was a gap yah experience with a difference! One I shall not be repeating especially when cows are slaughtered at funerals. For about 10 seconds I even considered becoming a vegetarian however that thought didnt last long when I remembered how much I want a KFC.
(And for the record our home made chicken curry was actually spectacular)

Nan and Grandad E Hi Hannah and Nadine we have just been reading your blogs and you seem to be having a very interesting time, when you return to the UK you will have great stories to tell, in fact you could write a book. Last night we went into town with Tracey and Mike and had a great meal, in fact it was the best meal ever with a beautiful bottle of wine, and as usual Tracey and Mlke would not let us pay for anything. This all from me for the moment, over to Nan. Hi my lovely girl thought you would like to know what we had, the menu was as follows starter Risotto in a lovely cream sauce followed by rack of lamb (one of your favourites and for desert gorgeous cherry pancake with chocolate sauce, yummy yummy. That's about all for now, take good care of yourselves, lots of love Nan Grandad xxx
