Thought the picture was fitting for today, partially because I am running out of images, and also because Huw has put up with me for a whole year today :D
Our second night in Hervey bay was much appreciated after sleeping in tents for two days, nice to wake up without aching everywhere! Must be getting old, but I'm sure paper-thin camping mats didn't help! We met a nice girl from Canada who told us all about her trip around Aus so far, and how she's out here working on her own because her boyfriend couldn't get a visa and had to go home again. The YHA in Hervey Bay was definitely a rarity, a roomful of 8 single beds is very unusual, and makes a change to have noone squeaking on the bunk above or below you.
We are currently in the town of 1770, or Agnes Water, as apparently they are pretty much the same or so close that people don't really distinguish, or something. Anyway, it's a very small town and so-called because it is the second landing site of James Cook in, shock horror, 1770!
We got here late on Wednesday night and went out to a bar for free hotdogs and a cheap drink. Free food is a must around here when it is offered, whether you are hungry or not! Barbies are particular popular, and we have had our fair share of them recently! The next day we chilled out on the beach, making the most of the sunny weather which has joined us again finally! In the afternoon, Gaelle and I went on our Scooteroo tour. Basically we were riding little choppers around town for 3 hours, taking in the sights. We got kitted up in our helmets and leather jackets, though whether we looked cool or like numpties will be for the viewing public if an Aussie computer ever lets me upload photos!
To begin with, we had to do the rather simple task of riding our bikes halfway round a roundabout to join the rest of the group on the road. Most people did this fine, but one girl managed to ride hers straight into a grass verge instead of steering around the roundabout. Wonder who that was? Oh, the shame. I'll look back and laugh I'm sure, but still getting slightly red-faced thinking about it. I'm pleased to say that was the only issue I had with my bike. The next 3 hours on actual real roads went really smoothly, getting up to a top speed of 60mph which felt very fast on the bike! Awesome ride, wind in my... well, helmet, doing some good sharp-ish turns where I stayed on the road, yay! We stopped for potato wedges and sour cream (yum) by the beach watching the sun set over the sea, getting some awesome photos, before riding back. All in all, fantastic time!
Today we are getting the greyhound late this evening at 9.10, so we've been chilling out again on the beach. Tomorrow we will get into Townsville late-morning, and are staying at the YHA in Magnetic Island, a ferry ride away from the mainland. Looks really pretty, and we'll probably be making the most of some more beach time as we will be in New Zealand in just over a week and it will be slightly more chilly than here!

Christine C Magnetic Island looks like a small paradise on Google pictures ... enjoy the summer before the cold in New Zealand!
