The next day we set off to a quiet town called Hervey Bay (I can't remember which weird bus driver dropped us off). The town itself is a bit of a dump with nothing going on. We were dropped off in the transit centre and I was left with the bags whilst Kim phoned the hostel. A rather drunk, presumably homeless man, attempted a conversation with me however it is beyond me what he was trying to slur. Moments later he was arrested by four policeman and after a bit of a struggle he was put in the back of a police car.
So, my first impressions of Hervey Bay were far from positive. A lady from the hostel picked us up and said all of two words to us throughout the whole journey. We decided to have a twin room this time as it was not much more expensive than a dorm. We were staying in what looked like an old lady's bedsit.. it certainly had charm. That night we had a feast of spaghetti bolognese and settled down on the sinking smoke stained sofas to watch Chicago, which Kim sung along to every single song :) girl after my own heart!!
The next morning I woke up feeling like death. However, I soldiered on and Steve (fellow Oz Experience passenger) and I went on a whale watching day. Kim was also feeling poorly and decided to stay at the hostel. Whale watching was absolutely AMAZING!! We saw lots of Humpback Whales who all jumped out of the water, free willy style. They even came right up to the boat. It was just fantastic, one of the best things I have ever seen. I was completely in awe at the magnificent creatures and never realised whales could be as playful as dolphins.
That afternoon, we changed hostels (as the bedsit did not have any availability). However, the new hostel room (a twin again) was freezing and both Kim and I were feeling considerably worse. The kind lady on reception gave me a portable heater.. I plugged it in and spent the rest of the afternoon asleep. Kim and I both awoke early evening and thought it would be a nice idea to surprise our parents with phone calls!!Although I still felt ill, talking to Mum and Dad definately perked me up!!
to be continued..
