Greetings from down under!!!!
Well after a long journey over - Bangkok - Singapore - Darwin - Cairns we made it to a sunny Cairns on Friday morning. Hostel Gilligans was extremely comfy with loads going on!
Spent the day sleeping in the sun....the best way to burn in all the places you least expect to! Friday night was spent listening to a live band before meeting some locals of Cairns that took us to a local bar called the Woolshed where more drinking and table dancing followed....
Then back to Gilligans for more of the same, minus the table dancing...
Saturday we were taking by the local boys to a local beauty spot - Crystal Cascades where you jump into the following cascades off various heights of rocks. We kept it safe whilst the guys tried to impress with their backflips/somersaults etc etc off a jump called No Fear. Hmm. This day trip was followed by drinks and a bbq round their rather nice bungalow in Redlynch.
Sunday morning we woke at the crack of dawn to head down to the reef terminal and jet off to the Great Barrier Reef. The weather was not good to start with but brightened up by the time we reach Michaelmas Cay. Here we both tried the free 10 min scuba dive, holding very tightly onto the rope! The instructor then took just the two of us off for about a 20minute dive around the reef which was amazing as all the colours were really showing and the fish were all swimming around us.
Once back to the boat we did a bit of snorkelling and a buffet lunch. Hannah then took the opportunity to do a 2nd dive, and although the sun wasn't shining as much she did meet a sea turtle down on the reef which she was able to feed and play with!!! Highlight of her trip so far :)
A quieter evening followed, a true backpackers dinner ($3 for dinner and a drink haha) followed by drinks and ice cream near the lagoon as we said our goodbyes to Cairns.
We are now in Mission Beach, following a trip to a Croc Farm where we were able to hold a baby croc and watch huge crocs being fed. Also fed some kangaroos and Kirsty fell in love with the dingoes! We are just about to head off for dinner and bingo with a big group from the hostel and have no plans as yet for tomo! Next stop will be Magnetic Island though.
Lots of love to all
Hannah and Kirsty xxxx
