The Gilis are three islands just off Lombok. They are one of the most popular places to visit and the largest, Trawangan, is the most social and where we spent most of our time. Here we found the best restaurant we'd found in Indonesia, Scallywags.. AMAZING!! We also bumped into Anna again from Sumatra and here she introduced us to local desert Martabak which we've been eating ever since! After we left Trawangan we went to the smaller and much quieter Meno which is where, for the first time, we tried our bunk hummock system that received so much ridicule in England! So we found two sturdy looking trees with a beachfront view and an abandoned hut near by incase of downpour emergencies and tied our hammocks one above the other with the tarp tied above both the hammocks like a upside down V. Baring in mind it hadn't really rained since being on the Gilis we were pretty confident that our expertly erected rain cover system, although very capable, wouldn't be tested... How wrong we were! Terenchtial down pour doesn't accurately describe the weather of that night! Thunder and lightning, rain that lashed us for the best part of 5 hours and lots of wind. In hind site not the best of nights to camp out. The biggest problem we encountered was the tarp we had wasn't actually a tarp at all, it was made out of the same material as the out side layer of a tent and leaked if touched. My hammocks whole left side was unfortunately touching it and so a leak ensued. After an hasty repair job and an impromptu shower we were back on track and despite conversation of abandoning and heading to the shack we endured and actually remained remarkably dry as did our stuff beneath us. All in all quite successful!
