We arrived at the south end of Lake Tahoe which was a bit of a disappointment just a long strip of stores and cheap restaurants but as we started up the west side it became clear why it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the USA. Stopping off at many vista points afforded spectacular views of the lake. The lake is densly forested and the highway winds around gorgeous sate parks, swimming beaches, historic mansions and pine shaded campgrounds. It is easy to see why Lake Tahoe is a millionaires playground.
Out one day we passed some show homes right by the lake and went in for a nosey. It was a stunning home on 3 floors with beautiful views right over the lake, on a small development of a few houses. The fittings inside were obviously very expensive and state of the art. The properties were available to buy outright or as quater ownership (timeshare) basis. We wandered around it drooling and I heard Peter downstairs ask the salesman the price. I was astonished all this with views to die for in a ski-in- ski-out location for $350,000. It was only as we were both upstairs on our own and I said to Peter wow, it's unbelievable $350,000 for this and Peter said no you clown he said it was three and a half... he means three and a half million dollars!!! I suddenly lost interest.
We were camped in the state park which are pretty much the only campgrounds around the lake, there were only a couple of privately owned ones which were booked up. We were watching the squirrel population. It must be coming up to the time they are storing food for the winter. We watched on particular squirrel take a big heavy pine cone which was probably 3 times its body weight and totally strip off the outside bark at top speed and toss aside the bits id didn't want. it kept rolling it over and over and then nibbling off the middle core and ate it. It left a stipped down inner husk that now liiked something like a loofah which it discarded. It then dug a hole and burried what it was storing in its pouches. All this went on whilst stopping and very noisily chasing off any other squirrel who came into his territory and at one time looked like it was going to fly off a branch and attack Peter as he got dangerously close to his food!!
