SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED
After yet another sleeper train we arrived in Udaipur. It's an amazing place. It has a real seaside feel to it. There are lots of small winding roads, packed with pretty shops, that lead down to the ghats on Lake Pichola. Our hotel has great views over the lake which is surrounded by mountains, palaces and temples. They filmed half of Octop**** here so almost every hotel has a nightly showing of the film in their restaurant. It's quite surreal sitting in the restuarant listening to the James Bond theme chiming in every ten minutes or so from the surrounding hotels as they start their showing at different times. Another thing that Udaipur is not lacking in is "German" bakeries! There is one little cafe here called the Eidelweiss which is always packed with Westerners. All these other so called german bakeries have now sprung up in an attempt to cash in.
We've visited the City Palace and taken a boat ride on the lake out to Jagmandir Island. Both had great views of the mountains and the Monsoon Palace.
I think Udaipur is our favourite place so far. There have been very few downsides to India - the main ones being the poverty and the mosquitos. The bugs here are the size of budgies. We've both been bitten to b*****y and due to my incessant scratching I now resemble a leper with weaping sores - NICE!!! To top it all off the copious amounts of anti-malarials and DEET spray that we've been subjecting ourselves to has left our minds slightly addled. Still, wouldn't change it for the world.
We've also made a new friend called Ramoon. He's a beautiful elephant that wanders around Udaipur - each time we see him we stop and have a cwch with him!
Next stop Jodhpur......
