We were up & out of the hotel at about 8:15 am today ready for our trip to Alcatraz. It was an eventful night as Ian woke us both up by shouting "Oi d*** head" at the top of his voice at 3am, he said he thought he saw someone in the room. We put the light on just to prove it was just us two in the room. Not quite sure what everyone in the rooms around us thought??!
We knew it would be cooler so Ian wore shorts and we took a cardy. We hailed a cab down to pier 33 to catch our boat.
When we arrived at about 8:45 it was fairly busy, we queued up to catch our boat & even were even made to have an official Alcatraz picture taken whilst queueing.
We boarded our boat and soon realised why we were wearing more layers today. We hit the fog and the temperature dropped, ian even had goose pimples! We could see alcatraz in the distance covered in fog.
The boat docked and we got off and went for a tour round the island. We were warned to stick to the paths and not upset the birds as they were nesting chicks, given the size of these gulls we did just that! Whilst on the boat Ian spotted a couple (probably in their 50s) both wearing man city shirts, this made Ian wonder whether this is the chap who sits next to Chris at eastlands who famously says "I'd die for City" (queue manc accent) which Ian continued to repeat for the whole trip!
The tour was fascinating including an audio tour of all the cells etc which was a real insight to the real Alcatraz. After this we hopped back on the ferry and bought a hotdog an a cup of tea to warm us up again.
We took a stroll down the piers and ended up at the end of the cable car line. We waited patiently for the next tram & jumped aboard. Straight away Ian wanted to stand so he could hold on & dangle off the side whilst going up and down the famous streets of San Francisco. This was definitely a highlight of our visit. We jumped off at union square & headed back to the hotel.
On our way back we stopped off at a diner, we both stuffed our faces & enjoyed free refills on coffee & pepsi. Nicola had the special which was a steak sandwich. She ate every bit....
After a quick rest we then headed back out, it felt even cooler & you could see the clouds covering the high rise buildings, ian had to grab his jacket from the boot. We had a look round Chinatown, maceys and union square. It felt less lively than the previous night so we picked up some food & took it back to the room. Ian had to stop & pick up some beer from a dodgy off licence to help him cut out the thought of that 11hour flight tomorrow.
