Our stay in camp 5 came to an end tray and we set off around 8 am, back along the headhunters trail for the 9 mm hike back to the boats. We made good time, despite the slippery and muddy conditions and also a couple of fallen trees blocking the path following the storms of the previous day. Only one leech incident for me (on my hand) and for Jon (just caught one trying to sneak into his boot). Arrived at the boat area by 10.30 and headed back to the luxury of the main camp with a bed and shower awaiting us. Also the heavy rains the previous day meant the river was higher and we didn't have to get out and push. It was absolute heaven to have a shower and put on clean dry clothes - it's amazing how quickly you become grubby and damp as the norm! Lunch of beef randang and rice was followed by our afternoon activity. Another short hike (just 2 km this time) took us to the rainforest canopy walkway - suspended walkways link between the trees cross crossing over the river some 25 m in the air and the longest in the world at almost 500m long. The first woman who went on it ahead of us only managed 5m before having to shuffle backwards and give up (I did think it might be Gillian Mckeith for a minute!). Jon and I had no problem - while it did sway and creak as you crossed the suspended walkways, we were used to this from the bridges we encountered on our hikes previously. It was just a bit higher and longer! The rest of the afternoon we relaxed and met up with the rest of the group for dinner and a briefing. A good day all round!
