Arrived at Mulu in a little twin prop plane - just 50 minutes from Miri. The camp isn't nearly as basic as we expected and we even have electricity and hot running water. After lunch we set off around 2pm for a hike through the jungle. After around 4kms we reached our destination of some spectacular caves. First was the massive deer cave - you can smell the
Inhabitants before you hear them. Copious amounts of guano and high pitched sqeaks provide evidence of the 3 million bats that live inside. We had to keep our hats on just in case! After touring Deer cave, we moved on to Langs Cave. Much smaller inside, but with limestone shaped into natural versions of Gaudi architecture. Also loads of stalactites and stalagmites, so pretty impressive. However, the highlight of the day was watching the exodus of 3 million bats - they literally created swarms as they continually left the cave over more than half an hour. Swooping around at the entrance they created a circular flow as more of their friends came out to play, then every so often they would swoop off like a giant flying snake formation off for a night's hunting. A rapid hike back to camp followed as we just got back before the rains really came down hard. An early dinner with the rest of the group and then back to our room to pack our day packs for our 2 night stay at the remote camp 5.
