Up bright and early again, I DO help myself to the cappucino machine! Today we head back out to Josefov to finish our visit there. On the way back over the bridge, we stop at St. Mikalaus cathedral. I simply do not have words to describe the beauty in this chapel. It is massive, ornately decorated in Baroque style. Huge statues of the apostles line the nave. There is an organ concert here tomorrow night, we will definitely come for this!
After Josefov, we took the metro over to Wenceslaus Square. The weather forecast is for rain tomorrow so we decide to hold off on the National Museum to have an indoor thing to do. I had read scary things about ticket collectors on the trains and sure enough, when we got off we were stopped by one. He showed us his badge and we showed him our tickets - no problem. The square is just like any other downtown shopping district really. Only it is encased in huge Art Nouveau buildings. We stopped for sandwiches from a street cart - oh so yummy - and walked around admiring the buildings and architecture. We found ourselves back in Old Town, stopped for a pivo to catch our breath. We found a tour stop and purchased a tour for Kutna Hora, a castle outside of Prague, for tomorrow.
Exhausted again, we came back to the hotel vowing to rest and come back to the Spanish Synagogue for their classical concert beginning at 6. Didn't make it. We went to explore the pubs along our street - generally we wanted to avoid anything in our area. It is very touristy and expensive. But we found one place, U Korcuna (The Cat). A small, local joint, full of men just getting off work. We ordered potato pancakes and cabbage, a smoked chicken with potato salad and pivo. Almost the best dish we've had so far! A group of men sauntered in, expansively saying "dobry vecer" to all. A group of them gathered in a back room and soon their were loud toasts and singing going on! What a great time. We left there and went to another local pub, U hrocha (the Hippo). The gang had followed us there! It is a smaller place, filled with locals again. We joined one group of young men at their table, watched a hockey game on tv. Other's were playing cards, the waiters and the cooks joining their customers at their tables - all smoking and having a great time. We then wandered the old alley ways around Mala Strana and finally ended back at the hotel.
The end of another exhausting and beautiful day (yes, I'll get my thesaurus out tomorrow!).
