Such a manic last day!!!
So we got up and did rounds half and hour early because we had to be on standby to go and cut up another elephant. We got to breakfast and they said we had 5 minutes to stuff ourselves with some food then we had to go dart a buffalo. So we rushed through, practically ran up from breakfast, crammed into the combi then set off. We got to the gate onto the main road then turned round and came back. Turned out there was a change of plan and we weren't doing it anymore!
So we got back then had to wait at the clinic for the vet to arrive and dart the snared lioness. She had to be tested for TB so that she can hopefully be released soon, once permits are sorted out. So they darted her and did the tests. Got some good pictures with her!
Then we had to go and help dart the leopard to see how his wounds were healing. They are looking very good. It was pretty scary though because the leopard was barely asleep.
Then we moved onto the brown hyena. That was being release to Moholoholo mountain view so they needed to dart it and put it in a carry box. For some reason the hyena reacted badly to the anaesthesia and its heart stopped and it stopped breathing. So CPR had to be done on it, which went on for a good 5 minutes but eventually he came round luckily!!! Later on in the dat (about 5pm) we all went and released it. It was pretty cool, we were stood by the box and it walked out, turned round and stared at us for a moment then ran off.
Had a couple of other disasters todat too. Well more like disasters that were resolved - all pretty lucky. Firstly, the serval kitten escaped and ran up a tree. One of the rangers had to catch it as it fell out. Also we went to clean xinandi the cheetah's camp, and we always go into the cage with her. However this time she looked a bit funny, and whilst we were scrubbing she suddenly ran towards us. She simply jumped onto the house and started purring but for a moment it was scary. I babysat Dela for 2 hours today. But she didn't sleep at all so no cuddles :( Then a new volunteer came in to see her, but got a bit spooked when Dela walked towards her so tried to leave again, but Dela decided she was going to leave as well, so pushed open the gate before she could close it. She knocked a sliding gate off its track so I had to try and cling onto it so it didn't fall off, then went to the grass pellet cage and started to munch on the grass pellets. Nothing I could do to stop her! She's one cheeky rhino!
Anyway, I can't complain, it has definitely been an action packed last day! I don't want to leave, I'm going to miss everyone and all the animals, but I'm looking forward to going somewhere new.
