We set off to Periyar to see the nature reserve this morning - 4 of us in a tuk-tuk with our luggage entertained the locals. We caught the bus no problems - the route took us up and up until we hit the tea plantations. After checking in at our hotel and sorting out park tours, we decided to go to a spice plantation. There was an interesting guided tour but after that it was just an opportunity for Fran to buy spices. At least they sold good chocolate as well.
Next morning, we had booked a jungle walk in the reserve. This didn't start until 11:00 - not the ideal time. The walk lasted for 3 hours and we saw plenty of bird life and butterflies as well as giant squirrels and monkeys but no tigers or even elephants.
We went on to a Keralan arts performance (Kathakali) where they dance and tell the story using extreme facial expressions. It was very warm in the theatre and I found myself nodding off - only to see the main performer staring at me (or so it seemed) making these weird facial expressions!
