We travelled to Hampi on the overnight train. To fortify ourselves for the journey we decided on a good lunch - a buffet at the best hotel in Mysore. It was then off to the station to find our 1st class sleeper carriage on the train. This is quite a civilised way to travel.
After a patchy nights sleep we arrived at Hospet where we were staying to visit the ruins of Hampi. After a shower and breakfast, it was off in a tuk-tuk to Hampi. Hampi is a vast site of a Hindu king who ruled all of south India and was destroyed by Muslims in the 16th century. We opted to cycle round it the first day. The site covers about 25 square miles and is in an area strewn with large granite boulders so looks almost surreal. It was hard work cycling round but we did see some far flung places - even took the bikes over the river by small ferry.
The next day, we hired a car and went round with a guide. He was very good and we saw lots more with him. The classic moment of the day was when Judi asked him about a structure decorated with birds. He said it was a monument built by a grieving man to his dead wife. Judi also thought he said that it was covered in birds because she liked big c*** - Judi couldn't stop laughing. He actually said she liked peacocks!!
