Hola!
Wow...the Inca Trail, what can we say?
It's amazing, fantastic! We have just finished our four day trek and what a trek it has been!!
There were only two people on the trek, that's right, just me and Lindsey. We also had one guide, a cook and a horse man with four horses accompanying us!
Day 1
What day!
Up at 4am.
Picked up at 5am. (But was six in the end as they could not find our hostel)
It was a three hour bus journey to the start of our walk.
We finally started at 9am up a very steep hill for about 30 minutes until we got to a man-made stream. It was flat for about 10k then up hill for 5 hours. It was a very long 6 hours walk until lunch at 4200 metres at around 3pm! It was tough.
Lunch was a three course meal in a tent. Soup, chicken, rice and vegetables followed by Cocoa tea. We then continued our climb for another 45 minutes to 4600 metres, through the pass with snow capped mountains on either side that were 6000+ metres high.
Then we got to go down hil,l although by now it was getting dark and we still had another 3 hours walk until we reached our camp.
Lindsey was not feeling well due to altitude sickness and we were mostly walking alone as our tour guide was panicking and rushing ahead to check it was safe. Once in a while we would see the torch of our guide in the distance so we knew which direction to go in, roughly!
We eventually got to our campsite at 8:30pm. We had walked a total of 16km over a 12 hour day.
Lindsey was very sick when we arrived and went to bed with no dinner. We were both asleep by 9pm.
We woke up to a beautiful view and a family of pigs right outside our tent. Lindsey was glad that she had not bumped into Daddy pig in the night when she had been to the toilet!
Day 2
All downhill, but still a long day - 20km through the forrest.
We camped next to a river after another 3 course meal. I was woken up by a pig sniffing my head! We love wildlife.
Day three
A short day as we only walked for three hours to Santa Teresa. We played cards for a an hour when we witnessed a cow being slaughtered on the side of the road. It was pretty shocking to watch. We then went to the hot springs where we drank beer served by the locals. Very nice.
Day four
We walked to Aguas Calientes along a disused railway track, it took us three hours. We were booked into a hotel by our guide then went to explore the local town. We had lunch and a few drinks as this was the end of the trekking!
Day five
Macchu Piccu!!
Up at 5am we got the bus with loads of other tourists up to Macchu Piccu. We explored the site and took lots of pictures.
I then made Lindsey climb Wayna picchu at 7am which took an hour but was well worth the climb. Here I proposed to her, despite her bad mood because of the climb! She said yes!! She was happier after that!
We went back to Aguas Calientes and had a cocktail to celebrate our engagement before getting back on the train to cusco, for six hours.
What happens next is for us to tell you when we get back.... It was awkward to say the least.
Love to you all,
Graham and Linds
