Hi,
We have now arrived safely in Peru.
We had fun in Lima which was a real surprise as we were not looking forward to it. We were staying in a nice area called Mariflores - this helped. I was a bit nervous about going to Lima after reading lots of horror stories in our guide book.
We were there for just two nights after a good flight with LAN airways. There was lots of leg space on the plane! We stayed in a hostel called Condor House. It was a very nice hostel with friendly staff.
We explored Mariflores where there were lots of shops, bars and restaurants. We found a cinema showing Harry Potter in English with Spanish subtitles so we booked tickets for 5:45pm showing. It was 4pm so we found a bar and had a few drinks - Pisco Sours!
This was Harry Potter's premier night so we thought it was going to be packed but the cinema was half empty. The film was very good. When we came out at 8:30pm there was a queue right out the door so clearly we picked the right time. We then found a nice Itaian restaurant for dinner. Very nice food and wine.
Next day we had a lie in due to all this flying. At 10am we went to a pottery museum - the Larco museum. They have the largest collection of pots in the world and it was well worth a visit. They also have a collection of very rude pots - very amusing! Next we had our lunch that we had brought that morning in the supermarket. It was like shopping in Asda which has been a while for us. We made ourselves a couple of ham and cheese rolls. Very nice and cheaper that eating out again!!
Then we headed for Lima city center. I did not enjoy this and I did not feel safe. This was prompted by our taxi driver telling us not to talk to the locals! Great. We looked around a bit, Lindsey was looking for a new book to read but no luck as they were all in Spanish (her Spanish is not that good yet!) We had been to every book store in Peru with no luck so we headed back to Mairflores to the shopping center that has been built onto a cliff edge. Great views of the sea, very similar to North America.
We are now in Cusco after another good flight with LAN. Great news, Lindsey found a book in English at the airport, 'The girl who played with fire' so no more traipsing around book shops! We are staying in a very nice hostel, with amazing views over Cusco city. This picture was taken from our bedroom/apartment.
We went on a good tour last night on a converted tram. We had dinner in a restaurant overlooking the main square. Lindsey had lama steak, which was not bad apart from the really sweet saurce - I ate most of it!
We are going to the market tomorrow (Sunday) and we meet our guide for the Salkantay trail on Monday. Then on Tuesday we start our trek.
Speak soon
Lots of love Graham and Lindsey
