Hi guys
We have been camping for a week now since San Francisco.
We stayed at Half Moon Bay, which was a really nice campsite right on the beach. We had Coronas and BBQ sausages on the beach whilst watching a beautiful sunset.
People are very friendly on the camp sites. One couple who were staying in a massive motor home next to us gave us beer, I think they felt sorry for us in our little tent. We like it though.
We did our 10k run in Santa Cruz, but it was very hilly and Lindsey had to walk the second half. I powered on through though and got a good result, 1hr 23 mins - and it was my first 10k! I didn't really know what I was letting myself in for. Lindsey had problems with her knees as it was down hill for the last 2k and was very steep. Lindsey still did good though, 1 hour 30 mins.
We started at 08:30 in the morning.
There were lots of runners. There were three entries: 50k, 29k and 10k
We got a very cool t-shirt for our efforts. We are very proud of ourselves.
We relaxed on the beach after but the water was freezing so we sat and watched some pelicans diving for fish.
Next stop was a campsite just outside of Santa Cruz. Again there were the usual racoons but also wild yet friendly kittens, and there was lots of other wildlife at this site.
We put our tent up as normal, I have it down to an art now. After putting the tent up and down for a few weeks, I can now get the tent up in under five minutes.
We went for a long walk on the beach where again there was more wildlife: seals, sea otters and pelicans diving for fish.
In the morning we were woken up to a very noisy woodpecker hammering outside our tent. We watched him peck the tree for five minutes from the door of our tent, before he flew away.
Next we stayed at a site just south of Monterey in the Redwood Forest trees again, with the amazing Sequoia trees. This was the nicest site that we have stayed at. We had everything available to us- free coffee in the morning, laundy, there was a river running by the side off our pitch. So we stayed for two nights.
We went to the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. This has the biggest fish tank I have ever seen. We spent most of the day here.
Then we drove along the Big Sur stretch. These roads are fantastic. Very scary though as they pass by the cliffs and are very windy but with fantastic veiws.
We stopped at the famous Henry Miller library which was a very interesting place. A small, run down shop in the middle of no where. It houses all of Henry Millers work and books plus other literary pieces. , Lots of famous bands have played in the grounds. They had Arcade Fire playing there that night doing an intimate gigg as it only holds about 100 people.
We drove about 100 miles down the coast to Celco, passing Esalen as we went by. Lindsey tried to get me to go to the Esalen hot tub but I didn't fancy getting naked in front of strangers!
Celco site was very different, we arrived late, but also being Friday night there was a car arriving late full of young adults, having a bit of a party. We were a bit nervous at first as it was dark. Not sure what was going on, but they were fine.
Next stop Las Vegas.
A long, long drive - 10 hours.
Love
Graham and Lindsey
