Graeme round the world
Day 81 - Tuesday 13th June. Landed at 2.45am and was greeted by my guide and driver, who took me to the Taj Palace Hotel. The drinving seems a bit eratic to say the least!!!!!! My room wasn't ready for 30 mins so they gave me some food and drink and upgraded me to my own suite, with lounge dressing room and enormous bed...even had my own mini office and fax machine :o)))) My guide advised me to rest for the remainder of the day to acclimatize to the heat and drink lots of water, but at 9am I felt that was quite enough rest and got up for breakfast and organized a sightseeing tour of Delhi. It is chaos on the roads, so it makes driving everywhere very exciting but my new driver seemed adept at cutting his way through the mayhem of bikes, cars, motorbikes motorized rickshaws, carts and pedestrians, with blast of car horns everywhere. The rule of the road seems to be pull out first and then look afterwards and it's everyone else's duty to get out of the way!! Went on a rickshaw through Old Delhi to visit some markets. It is very entertaining visiting these places as they don't get discouraged if you say not you don't want to buy anything they just keep showing you stuff, probably hoping they will wear you down into a purchase. A good strategy for the street traders, who swoop as soon as you get out of the car is to tell them you will buy something when you've finished sightseeing and then just keep saying no when you get back to the car. They keep offering at increasingly lower prices and the secret seemed to be to get into the car and then start to drive away a little bit but then undo your window and get you get the lowest price :o) Visited the Presidential Palace, government buildings, India Gate [memorial to the 90k Indian soldiers who died in WW1], Red Fort, Jama Masjid - The country's oldest mosque built in 1656 in tribute to the Mughal Kings and climbed to the tower of the 2nd prayer tower for some amazing views of Delhi through the heat haze. The stairs up where dark and narrow and it was such a squeeze getting by anyone going up or down, it reminded me of being in Marrakech. Dinesh my guide said I was very lucky as it was a bit cloudy so only about 38 degrees!!! We had Indian for lunch which was yummy, if a little hot, but was a bit off putting when I found a small beetle in my rice :o( Dinesh took me to Shri Lakshmi Narain Hindu Temple, where is was a really lovely experience to watch him and other Hindu's pray to their individual Gods and then explain about his religion. There was a fantastic room full of ornate mirrors, where you could see 100's of yourself, the other Hindu's joked with me and were very friendly and inviting into their beautiful temple, which had an amazing energy and vibe inside it. By this time I was exhausted, so went back to the hotel for Indian head and body massage, which was so relaxing I had to order room service, as I was too wasted to go down for dinner. Had a very good nights sleep.
