Maybe not Gordon's last trip
Have had another few days chasing the remains of ancient Anasazi tribes around the cliffs and pueblos of the South West and am now close to becoming a bore on the subject of why they settled here, what they did here and why they left here!
Truth is there are umpteen different views on all of the above so I could be quite safe in my views, even in a room full of anthropologists.
Have also spent several days, it seems, in museums dedicated to the whole Native American experience, from their genesis BC to their continuing exploitation by Government bodies today. MInd you, they are not against a few fibs themselves, one being that the US Government set out, in the 1800\'s to kill all the bison on the plains in order to deprive the native indian of his main source of food. Even though I like a conspiracy or two even I am a little sceptical about that one.
Having said that I have now eaten Buffalo (bison) for the second time since getting here and it aint half bad.
Also finally managed to get some Mexican food which tasted of something other than beans and melted cheese. This one was fish tacos. Also now understand that tortillas, tacos, enchiladas etc all start from the same place - flour \'crepe\' and then are filled with various things. Used to think that they were all the same and just had different names to fool us gringos.
Forgot to mention before that I also stayed in The Apache Motel, MOab, \"where John Wayne stayed while filming The Comancheros\" and where the receipts bear the legend \"come again soon, pilgrim\".
Funny signs:
Outside a outlet in Santa Fe called CHEEKS. \"Now hiring for all positions\".
T Shirt: Sex is like air. Not that important unless you aren\'t getting any.
Still cannot load any pics at present so will have to promise that the scenery in all the canyons was amazing but that New Mexico has been somewhat of a disappointment in comparison.
Lots of hats and boots though and lots and lots of \"genuine hand made native american blankets, pottery and jewellery\".
At a first glance it would appear that the entire Indian Nations are now engaged in producing tourist souvenirs ranging from key rings to ornate pottery vessels for sale at several thousand dollars.
Fortunately, because the best pottery is truly wonderful, and sells for astronomical prices to collectors, I have been able to resist investing.
That said, I am off tomorrow to the Acoma Peublo where they make the most beautiful black and brown decorated pottery.
Just as insurance, the same Acoma tribe have also got a casino and championship golf course on their land!
Who said they were just a bunch of ignorant savages?
