So after our little diversion in Luxembourg we did a mammoth 6 hour, 550km drive accross the breadth of Germany to our current location of Nuremberg. We picked this mainly as its a good stop off before crossing the border into the Czech Republic but also as there is so much recent history in Germany we felt we should really look at some of it.
However first things first, when we arrived G was very keen to find somewhere showing the European Champions league so we spent last night in a very civilised pub/dining room watching the match drinking beer and munching on bratwurst salad. The result was a bit of a let down but the beer wasn't. We cycled back to the campsite wondering what the big building we'd used as a "landmark" was all about.
Today we found out...turns out Nurenburg was the spiritual home of the Nazi party way back when and our campsite (on the edge of town) is situated more or less on the edge of the "Grosse Strasse", right in the middle of the area used for the famous or infamous (depending on your point of view) Nurunberg rallies of the late 1930's. The big building was one of the monoliths designed by one of Hitlers favoured architects to convey the power and presence of "The Riech". The grand dream was started but not completed and the area is now given over to recreational parks and lakes. The "big building" (can't remember it's formal title) is now a museum that provides a history of the Nazi party, how it started, how it worked and gives a pretty facinating insight into why Germany was so Nationationalistic during this period.
A short cycle ride took us into the centre of the city. Cyclists are well catered for here (as elsewhere visited to date) with loads of dedicated cycle paths and places to tie your bikes up. Very quaint old town, with a river and sort of castle thing at the highest point. There were an unlimitless supply of cafe's and sausage shops, a Germophiles paradise. Nice place with a nice feel, stark contrast to the morning's museum visit (couldn't quite imagine the war trials that were held here).
Tommorow it's back to "our mistress the road" as we head further East into the Czech Republic.
By the way, log onto the latest pictures to catch sight of one of the best campsite toilet blocks we've run across so far. This has spawned a new photo directory we've titled "the best and worst places to shxxt !" I'm fairly confident that the first shown will be unbeaten for sheer extravagence and over the topness and that it will be downhill from here on in...will also have to consider the implications of walking into toilets armed with my camera ???
