Heard rain and a cacophony of raucous birdlife during the night - but fortunately the sun was shining by the time we had brekkie and headed off for our Cape Tribulation adventure day. Decided to drive on for a short distance before making our first stop....the road is completely sealed though narrow, winding and with constant speed humps and dips to ensure speed is kept to a minimum. Once the road hit the coast we stopped on Thornton Beach at CJs Bar & Grill for our coffee, after a stroll along the beautiful expanse of beach to the mouth of the creek. Perfect spot for our morning caffeine hit! Continued north passed Noah and Coconut Beaches making our next stop at the Dubuji boardwalk track with access to the pristine Myall
Beach as well. Sensational rainforest and mangrove scenery. The 1.2kms of boardwalk was an awesome structure of rubberised wood-like planks....obviously resistant to copious volumes of rain. A few scrub fowl wandering around the car park area.
We seemed to manage to miss the turn off for the Cape Tribulation walk and lookout ....in no time the sealed road had ended ...Oops! Continued for a few kms but was really too rough and unpleasant in our little Toyota Corolla to persist...a short distance on and its definitely 4WDs only! Not far back to the look out with access to Cape Tribulation beach. Kulki lookout only a short walk but lovely view across Coral Sea along Emmagen Beach.
Seeing as we had gone as far as we could go....we headed back down again, this time stopping at Marrdja boardwalk for another 1.2km rainforest board walk. Much more mangrove in this area .....and caught part of a tour so learnt a few interesting things. Spotted tiny red crabs, a few spiders and some brightly coloured birds (Fly-catchers apparently....)
Starting to feel peckish but quickly called into the Dainteee Tea Company....literally a stand off the road selling tea on an honesty system by the side of sprawling tea plantations.
Lunch was at Lync-Haven cafe and restaurant.... yummy burger and foccacia....and an interesting location with pet snakes, lorikeets and other birds.
Made sure our next stop was the Daintree Ice-cream company as had been recommended...and was delicious! Unusual tropical fruits grown in their orchard and used to make scrumptious creamy ice cream - coconut, soursop, yellow soursopte and wattleseed.
Not far on and we turned off for the 6km drive out to Cow Bay beach....stopping enroute at Crocodylus Village - a tent-style bungalow resort in the jungle suggested for dinner. Looked worth a try. Cow Bay beach was ideallic and picturesque....kids were enjoying a rope swing from the trees. Floravilla ice cream on the junction of Cow Bay Road was another stop ....tasty mango and coconut....made by a quirky alternative elderly artist....nice and different...
We decided to cover the last points of interest today so drove down to the Alexandra Range lookout point with a spectacular view across to Cow Bay and over to Port Douglass. Then it was back a short distance to turn off onto Tulip Oak Road to cover the Jindalba boardwalk....another rainforest experience - all timber stairs and boardwalk. This one more up and down ...with many running streams. Each rainforest area is certainly a little different!
We were glad to get back to our unit for a short rest before heading over to the pub then back to Crocodylus for dinner. Had a bottle of wine and ordered dinner - a selection of about 5 options for $17 each ...quite tasty and certainly a different dining experience. Had a nightcap at the pub before back for an early night.
