Saturday …no… Every night is Salsa time!
But Saturday night is special and I have to go. My favorite place in town is Donde Fidél - maybe because I haven't had time to look around for alternatives or maybe it's because this place simply is the best. It's more than anything a salsa bar where grown ups come and enjoy themselves - I mean really enjoy, not just to be seen. But you ARE seen and imagine two small crowded rooms with very low ceilings. The ceiling in once side of the bar is all glass cases with instruments donated by famous salsa musicians. The doors are always wide open and even though the AC is it's as hot as Hell but it all adds to the fun. Really there isn't a lot of space to dance so it does get intimate. The walls are packed with photos of the owner Fidel always in a striped polo shirt posing with salsa celebrities from all over the world. Gilberto Santa Rosa, Oscar de Leon, Marc Antony you name it. They all visit Donde Fidel from time to time and not just to perform but also as friends of the house.
Although I am rusty on the moves my rhythm is still ok. Here the salsa is danced with less vueltas (turns) than in the cuban salsa and sometimes a little too close ;-) But being blond and blue-eye I normally start by enjoying a beer or too just small talking until someone gets curious enough and asked me to dance. And all of the sudden I'm one of them - just because I can salsa a little! The atmosphere is thick with Alegría and smiles which makes you feel caressed the minute you walk in the door. Couples dancing showing their joy or just enjoying watching other couples dancing. It's highly appreciated if you play around and make funny dance moves. Then the audience shout out their appreciation by clapping and yelling: Sabor! meaning tasty or juicy. Sometimes I'm told that I have 'mucho sabor' and it makes just makes me shake my booty a little more.
All my loving thought to my entire salsa family in Denmark although I haven't seem most of you for a long time. But you know what I'm talking about. And the rest of you have the opportunity to experience it too. So if you feel like it, stop by and let's share a couple of Club Colombias and a salsa at Donde Fidéls. Salsa y sabor!
